QR Code Scam: Think Before You Scan!

Don't Get Zapped by QR Code Scams: Stay Safe in the Digital Age

Ever scanned a QR code without a second thought? It happens to all of us! But what if that seemingly harmless code could steal your personal information or infect your device with malware? QR code scams are a growing threat, but with a little awareness, you can easily protect yourself.

What are QR Code Scams?

QR codes (Quick Response codes) are those black and white squares you see on everything from restaurant menus to billboards. They can store website addresses, contact information, or even trigger actions on your phone. Unfortunately, scammers can use them for malicious purposes as well.

Here's how a typical QR code scam works:

The Bait:

You encounter a QR code on a flyer, poster, or even a random street sticker. It might promise a free gift, discount code, or access to exclusive content.

The Scan:

Curious, you scan the code with your phone's camera.

The Trap:

Instead of taking you to the promised website, the code could:

• Download malware onto your device.

 • Steal your login credentials for social media or banking apps.

Direct you to a phishing website that looks legitimate but steals your information.

How to Avoid QR Code Scams:

Staying safe is easy! Here are some simple tips to follow:

Be Wary of Unfamiliar Codes:

Only scan QR codes from trusted sources. Don't scan random codes you see on the street or in unfamiliar locations.

Inspect the Link Before Clicking:

Some QR code scanners will show you the destination URL before you click. If it looks suspicious, don't visit it!

Use a QR Code Scanner App with Security Features:

Several scanner apps offer additional security features like checking the URL's safety before you click.

Never Enter Sensitive Information After Scanning:

Legitimate QR codes won't ask you to enter passwords or banking information.

Spread the Word!

• QR codes are a convenient technology, but with a little caution, you can avoid falling victim to scams. Share this information with your friends and family to keep them safe online.
